MAYNARDVILLE – The Grainger High School Lady Grizzly soccer team spent most of fall break competing in the District Three Tournament.

In the first game of the district tournament, Grainger was scheduled to take on the Cherokee High School Lady Chiefs. However, the Cherokee team was forced to forfeit the game due to injuries and the lack of enough players to compete.

With that forfeit, the Lady Grizzlies advanced to the district semifinal game where they traveled to Union County to take on the Lady Patriots, who defeated Claiborne in first-round action. In that match played last Tuesday, the Lady Grizzlies were able to shut down Union County’s key players as the girls laid it all on the field.

That allowed Grainger to dominate the first half to take a 3-0 lead into the intermission. In the second half, the Lady Grizzlies added three additional goals to post a 6-2 victory that moved the team to the district championship match and qualify for the region tournament.

Matty Tanner and Abby Young, with two goals each, led the Lady Grizzlies in scoring. In addition, Grainger got one goal each from Ramsey Thomson and Alayna Sneed. Thomson’s goal came on a corner kick that she put into the net. That was the second time this season she had accomplished this feat.

CORRYTON – The Lady Grizzlies traveled to Gibbs last Thursday to take on the Gibbs High School Lady Eagles for the district championship. In that match, Grainger battled the Eagles on even terms in the first half which ended in a scoreless tie.

Although the girls played hard in the second half, the more experienced Lady Eagles scored three goals for a 3-0 victory and the district championship. “With a few exceptions, our girls come to high school never having played soccer before,” said coach Tonya Wear. “That shows when you play teams who have been playing since they were younger, whether AYSO, club soccer or middle school. Our girls have really accomplished a lot with their level of experience.”

Following completion of the district championship game, the girls soccer district awards were presented. Grainger’s Laura Short was selected as Rookie of the Year while Lauren Longmire, Matty Tanner and Abby Young were named to the All-District first team.

The Lady Grizzlies competed against Catholic High School, the District 4 champions, last Tuesday night in a Region Two semifinal game.
