WASHBURN – Last Friday night in their second home Hall of Fame game, the Washburn High School Lady Pirates took on the Lady Buccaneers from University High of Johnson City.
The Lady Bucs started strong; taking a 7-6 lead over Washburn at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Pirates defense allowed only two points in the second quarter, while scoring 11. Washburn led 17-9 at the half.
In the second half, the Lady Pirates offense continued to put up the points as Washburn took a 35-16 lead after three quarters. The Lady Pirates continued the baskets in the final quarter; scoring a 45-21 victory and improving their record to 2-0 on the season.
Senior point guard Haley Nicley and junior Sierra Bailey were the driving forces in the big win. Nicley poured in 17 points, while also recording three steals and two assists. Sierra Bailey recorded a double-double as she drained a pair of threes and totaled 13 points, while pulling down 10 rebounds. The two players went 16-of-18 at the foul line as Nicley was nine-for-10, and Bailey was seven-of-eight. Ruthie Tolliver continued her strong play as she recorded four points and pulled down seven big rebounds. In addition, the Lady Pirates earned three points each from BreAnna Scearce and MaKensey Lay, two points each from Emery Coffey and Emily Kincaid and one point from Rikelle Bowlin.
The next game for the Washburn teams will be Tuesday, November 28, when they host West Greene at the Pirate’s Cove. The Buffaloes are a AA team from District 2.
