DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA – Church Hill and Mount Carmel rank among the 10 safest cities in Tennessee for 2017, based on a survey by the RoadSnacks website.
Church Hill ranked sixth, up two spots from 2016. Mount Carmel was eighth, down four from last year.
The report was based on a study of the FHI Uniform Crime Report. The rates of property crimes and violent crimes were used to determine the rankings.
The website only used cities with populations of more than 5,000. Church Hill’s population is 6,714. The population of Mount Carmel is 5,424.
There are 92 cities in the state with qualifying populations. Signal Mountain was ranked the safest city in the state.
The two Hawkins County municipalities also ranked high in two other categories.
Mount Carmel was ranked as the fourth whitest city with a 95.8 percent white population. Church Hill was fifth, with a white population of 94.1 percent. The rankings were based on the U.S. census. The cities were also ranked high among conservative cities in the state, based on most recent voting records in the presidential election. Mount Carmel was 19th, and Church Hill was 20th. Each had a conservative voting record of 72.65 percent.
The website describes its mission as sharing information about places “that not everyone wants to hear.”
