Toys for Texas to hold two-day toy collection at West End Walmart

MORRISTOWN – The Toys for Texas toy drive will be onsite at Walmart in Morristown, 4431 W. Andrew Johnson Hwy., Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2.

Volunteers will accept toy donations throughout each day, beginning at 8 a.m.

Toys are being collected for children who live in areas devastated by flooding during hurricane Harvey in Port Arthur and Orange, Texas.

The toy drive is spearheaded by Alisa Howerton, who said she came up with the idea during a visit to Texas in October to help with recovery efforts. When Howerton observed a woman at a Christian ministry sorting children’s socks from the adult-sized socks, she said she asked why they were being separated. The woman told her she was going to save the socks for Christmas presents for the children. Howerton said it broke her heart to think the children in that area might only get socks for Christmas, and the idea of having a toy drive was born.

Donation boxes have been placed at several businesses in Grainger County and surrounding areas. Toy collection locations are:
