Three days remain for toy drive

BEAN STATION – Only a few days remain to make a donation to the Toys for Texas toy drive.

Donation boxes will begin being picked up Friday, December 15.

The toy drive is an effort led by Alisa Howerton, who said she felt led to help ensure children who lost their homes and all their belongings during Hurricane Harvey had something special for Christmas.

Howerton and her husband, Pastor Scott Howerton, traveled to Texas during Grainger County’s spring break in October to deliver donated items to affected residents and to assist with home repair efforts. While there Howerton said she observed a woman at a Christian ministry sorting children’s sock from adult’s socks and asked why she was separating them.

The woman told her she was saving the children’s socks for use as Christmas presents because it might be all they would get come Christmas.

Howerton said, “I just wanted to be able to give them something to smile about, something to make them a little bit excited about. Because they’re living this day to day. We saw it on the news for a week or so and that was it, and we forget that they’re still living this day to day. Seeing it is heartbreaking.”

Toys collected and purchased through the toy drive will be headed to the areas of Port Arthur and Orange, Texas Tuesday, December 19 courtesy of Dale Moles.

Moles will transport the toys to locations in Port Arthur and Orange where they will be distributed to parents in need, just in time for Christmas. American Airlines is providing two round-trip tickets to allow Alisa and Scott Howerton to be able to travel to Texas for the toy distribution.
