BLAINE – The city’s board of mayor and aldermen awarded a contract to Whaley Construction to replace the bridge on Milligan Lane, Monday.
Whaley’s bid of $439,085 was the lowest of six bids submitted last month for the project.
It will be funded by the state under the IMPROVE Act adopted by the General Assembly in its most recent session.
The board also heard a pitch from John DeVault, president of the Grainger County Little League, for the city to rejoin the local association. With only three teams this year, the recreation department affiliated with a league in East Knox County.
“We are not trying to create a turf war. We just want Blaine back. We want to play on this field,” DeVault said. “I know in the past, there was a feeling it was all about Rutledge. That’s not the case anymore.”
Because the field is not currently lighted, DeVault agreed with board members that games would have to be played there Saturdays.
DeVault said signup dates for the county will be Jan. 13, Jan. 27 and Feb. 3. League play is scheduled to begin in April.
Board members were receptive to the idea and asked DeVault to come back to the January meeting to discuss the issue further.
Because of a federal holiday the third week of January, the BMA’s meeting will be moved to Jan. 22.
