Ray Allen Shirley, 84, Johnson City, native of Rutledge, passed away Saturday, December 9. He was the youngest of three sons of the late Earl and Grace Davis Shirley. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Edward and Wayne Shirley. He is survived by his wife, Linda Wight Shirley (They would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in January.); sons, Lynn (Ellyn) and Michael (Bobbie); grandchildren, Sarah Rachel and Ben; and numerous, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a member and former deacon of Clark Street Baptist Church and a graduate of Rutledge High School and Carson Newman College. He was employed with B & W Tobacco for 25 years and later with Walmart, in Johnson City. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the UT Vols and Atlanta Braves. He loved vintage antique cars, had a sharp mind and enjoyed telling stories about his life and family. He was a U.S. Army veteran. It was his wish to be cremated with no formal services. The family expressed thanks to Dr. Richard McDavid and Pam Trantham for the loving care they gave him. Appalachian Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 800 E.
