NASHVILLE – U. S. Rep Diane Black has taken out a petition to run for Governor in the August 2 Republican Primary.

The office is open this year since Gov. Bill Haslam is term limited and cannot run again. Black is the eleventh candidate to join the GOP field for the primary. Five Democrats have also obtained petitions for that party’s primary

Howard Cary Morris has taken out a petition for both the Republican and Democrat U. S. Senate primaries. He must choose one primary or the other at the time he files.

The Senate seat is also open since Sen. Bob Corker is retiring after two terms.

In Grainger County voters will also be choosing nominees for the U.S. House seat being vacated by the retiring John J. Duncan Jr.

The 35th State House seat will also be on the primary ballot. State Rep. Jerry Sexton and County Commissioner James Acuff will be facing off in the Republican primary. No Democrats have picked up for the seat.

Both parties will be holding elections for their respective party executive committees.

A nonpartisan election for Grainger County Board of Education will also be held in August.

The qualifying deadline for those elections is April 5 at noon.
