THORN HILL – Countryside Family Market in Thorn Hill, formerly Jarnigan’s Grocery, is a general store with a focus on community.

The business, which is owned by Thorn Hill residents Tim and Debbie Minard, has a variety of items for customers to purchase, from its lunch plates to canned items and its “Pick Five” program, which allows customers to pick five items from its designated section for $19.99.

Former owners Betty and Norman Jarnigan opened the business October 9, 1982 before selling the business to the Minards in February 2020. Betty said her parents owned the store for approximately five years before it closed for five years. Betty and her husband then began their business. Betty said she enjoyed her time with Jarnigan’s Grocery.

Tim said the couple wanted to keep the same atmosphere the Jarnigans created with Jarnigan’s Grocery. He said they cater to the long-term customers of the business. Countryside Family Market now serves hot dogs, chili dogs, slaw dogs and sandwiches. Customers can also find an automotive section and a hygiene and toiletries section among canned and frozen foods in the store. Countryside Family Market also sells 100-percent gasoline.

A feature section of the store called the Local Corner is where locals can sell handcrafted goods. Countryside Family Market charges 15 percent of profits, which is given back to the community. Debbie said the money has gone to provide food baskets and help with funerals, among other projects. She said the community is talented.

While Tim said the couple would like to keep the store the way the Jarnigans had it, a few modifications have been made. He said he has added a bathroom, a heat and air unit and a ramp.

He said Countryside Family Market also accepts packages from FedEx and UPS for residents in hard-to-reach locations. Residents can pick their packages up during a visit to the store.

Debbie holds a free knitting class at the store every Tuesday at 7 p.m. The class is a community outreach program dedicated to connecting with others. Countryside Family Market will also hold a fall festival Saturday, November 14 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Local crafters will have their items available for purchase at the event.

Debbie said she feels blessed to be part of the Thorn Hill community. She expressed her thanks to the community and customers for accepting the couple for who they are and for helping them whenever they’ve been in need. The couple encouraged everyone to shop locally.

Countryside Family Market is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sundays from noon until 6 p.m. Anyone who would like more information about Countryside Family Market can call (865) 767- 2557.
