GHS offering Microsoft Office Specialist certification

RUTLEDGE – Grainger High School (GHS) is currently offering Microsoft Office Specialist certification in its Computer Applications and Advanced Computer Applications classes.

The classes are offered as part of the Office Management Career and Technical Education (CTE) cluster. Students can earn certification as a specialist in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint. Students take the Microsoft Certified test after completing an approximate six-week course in each tested area. Students in advanced classes now have the opportunity to become certified as experts in Excel also.

The Microsoft Office Specialist Program provides industry-leading assessments of skills and knowledge through GHS’ new project-based testing, giving students and professionals real-world exercises to appraise their understanding of Microsoft Office. This guarantees every certified user has demonstrated the ability to command the full features and functionality of Microsoft Office, preparing them for future academic or workforce opportunities.

According to GHS representative Derrick Combs, Microsoft Office Specialist certification increases employee proficiency for all job types. It also claims 99 percent of all certification participants substantially increased their Microsoft Office “know-how” by becoming Microsoft Office Specialist-certified. In addition, 89 percent of supervisors say that Microsoft Office Specialist-certified employees are more proficient users of Microsoft Office programs, according to Combs.

According to Combs, 82 percent of certified employees said becoming MOS-certified gave them more confidence in their abilities as a worker. In addition, 81 percent of certified employees said they are more dedicated to their employer after being given the opportunity to become Microsoft Office Specialist-certified.

According to Combs, 88 percent of certified employees said MOS certification made them more effective in their work.

Combs said Microsoft Office Specialist certifications are valuable for students, teachers and school systems because they empower students and educators. For students, Microsoft Office Specialist boosts academic performance and prepares them for college and careers. For educators, Microsoft Office Specialist courses provide targeted training and support every step of the way. For Administrators, Microsoft Office Specialist improves institutional results, according to Combs.

At this time, 90 certificates have been awarded with some students having passed all three certification tests. If students pass all three tests, they receive a special certificate from Microsoft designating them as a Microsoft Specialist Associate.
