RUTLEDGE – Former assistant principal Greg Clay will return to Washburn School as principal effective July 1.
He is currently principal at Horace Maynard Middle School in Union County.
“We are thrilled to have Greg Clay returning ‘home’ to Washburn School where he was assistant principal for many years. There is no doubt in my mind Washburn School is in great hands for many years to come,” Director of Schools Dr. James Atkins said. “Mr. Clay is an excellent administrator and we are fortunate to have him.”
Clay will succeed Daniel Bishop, who has served this year in an interim capacity.
Bishop replaced Ginny McElhaney, who served more than two decades as assistant principal and then principal. Atkins appointed her supervisor of special education in the summer of 2019.
Bishop will return to his full-time job as supervisor of federal programs at the end of the school year. He will also continue to coach the Lady Pirates basketball team.
Atkins said Clay’s younger brother, Aaron, will continue as assistant principal and athletic director. Brad Flatford, who has also served as an assistant principal this year, will be leaving at the end of the school year. He will not be replaced, Atkins said.
