Pirates struggling for wins

WASHBURN – Struggles continue for the Washburn High School Pirates basketball program.

The Pirates took the lead on a three-point shot to begin the game against Cumberland Gap High School Monday night. But the Panthers scored the next 13 points on the way to a 22-10 first-quarter lead. The second quarter was more competitive and Cumberland Gap led 35-21 at the half. 

The Panthers stretched the lead to 46-28 after three, finishing off the game 69-41 for the win.

Rance Shipe led Washburn in scoring with 16 points, followed by Austin Bailey with 12 points. No other player scored more than four points.

In a District 2A game Thursday, January 7, Jellico raced out to an early lead and coasted to an 84-40 victory.

Shipe and Bailey again led in scoring, with 15 and 11 points respectively.
